इन्द्रः · वज्रपाणिः
Indra Deva
Honored in more than 250 hymns of the Rigveda, Indra is the heroic king of the Devas who shatters thedark clouds of obstruction (Vṛtra) with His thunderbolt (Vajra) to release the cosmic waters and the light of dawn.
More hymns in the Rigveda are addressed to Indra than to any other deity. Wielding the celestial thunderbolt (Vajra) forged by Tvaṣṭṛ, Indra represents dynamic spiritual courage, sovereign strength, and the luminous mind that breaks through inertia and ignorance.
His supreme feat—celebrated in Rigveda 1.32 ('Indrasya nu vīryāṇi pra vocam')—is the slaying of the dragon Vṛtra ('The Obstructor') who had imprisoned the life-giving rivers and the light of the Sun. By shattering Vṛtra, Indra sets the seven rivers flowing and wins the dawn for humanity.
