Devī Saraswatī

Revered across the Rigveda as 'Ambitame, Nadītame, Devitame'—the Best of Mothers, Best of Rivers, and Best of Goddesses—Saraswatī is both the sacred Vedic river and the luminous Goddess of Speech (Vāk) and inspired wisdom (Dhī).

Along the banks of the mighty Saraswatī River, the ancient Rishis beheld and chanted the hymns of the Rigveda. In Rigveda 6.61 and 2.41.16, she is celebrated simultaneously as a roaring, life-sustaining river flowing from the mountains to the ocean and as the divine Mother who awakens eloquence, truth, and spiritual insight.

As Vāk (Sacred Speech), she reveals her cosmic majesty in the famous Devī Sūkta (Rigveda 10.125), declaring that she walks with the Rudras and Vasus and uplifts the sage whom she loves into a knower of Brahman.
